Best Tax-Free Address for ChatGPT Plus Subscription in 2025
If you're subscribing to ChatGPT Plus at $20/month, using a billing address in a tax-free state eliminates sales tax entirely. Five US states charge 0% sales tax: Oregon, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Alaska. For ChatGPT Plus specifically, Oregon is the top recommendation because OpenAI processes payments through Stripe, which applies state sales tax based on your billing ZIP code.
Why Oregon 97201? Portland's 97201 ZIP code sits in the downtown/Southwest district with a median household income of approximately $62,000. Oregon charges 0% sales tax statewide — no exemptions needed, no digital goods carve-outs. The area code is 503 (or 971 for overlay), the timezone is Pacific (UTC-8), and the local electric utility is Portland General Electric. These details matter if a platform ever cross-references your profile for consistency.
How AVS Works with OpenAI: When you enter your billing address at checkout, OpenAI's payment processor (Stripe) sends the street number and ZIP code to your card issuer for Address Verification Service (AVS) matching. The billing address you provide to OpenAI must exactly match what your bank has on file. If you're using a virtual card service like Privacy.com, Revolut, or Wise, register that card with your chosen Oregon address before subscribing.
Tax Savings Breakdown: At $20/month, subscribers in high-tax jurisdictions like Chicago (10.25%), Seattle (10.25%), or Los Angeles (9.5%) pay $24-$24.60/year in unnecessary sales tax. An Oregon address eliminates this completely. Over a year, that's a guaranteed saving — small individually, but meaningful if you're managing multiple subscriptions or team accounts.
Alternative Tax-Free States: Delaware (ZIP 19801, area code 302, Eastern time, Delmarva Power) is the second-best option, especially for users who want an East Coast timezone match. Montana (ZIP 59101, area code 406, Mountain time, NorthWestern Energy) works but has lower population density, making addresses less common. New Hampshire (ZIP 03101, area code 603, Eastern time, Eversource) and Alaska (ZIP 99501, area code 907, Alaska time, Chugach Electric) are viable but less frequently used for digital subscriptions.
Risk Factors: OpenAI does not currently perform IP geolocation checks against billing addresses for ChatGPT Plus. However, mixing a tax-free billing address with a payment card registered in a different state will cause AVS failure and payment decline. Always ensure your card's registered address matches your billing address exactly. Final Recommendation: Use Oregon 97201 (Portland, area code 503, Pacific time, Portland General Electric) for your ChatGPT Plus subscription to pay exactly $20/month with zero sales tax.
